every nyc event photographer's website says the same three things: "authentic moments," "documentary style," "no posed shots." none of that tells you anything. here's what actually does.
a curated homepage grid shows you their best 20 images ever. it doesn't show you a full event. ask for a link to a complete gallery from a past shoot - a real one, start to finish. that's where you see if the coverage is actually consistent or just a handful of lucky frames surrounded by filler.
some photographers stage everything - group shots, forced smiles, "look here" moments. others disappear into the crowd and shoot what's actually happening. neither is wrong, but you should know which one you're booking before the invoice, not after.
"fast turnaround" means different things to different photographers. ask for a real number of days, not a vague promise. if you need images the same night for social, say so upfront - not every photographer offers that, and it's a fair thing to filter on.
pricing that's a total mystery until a sales call. a portfolio that's all headshots and zero actual event coverage. no clear answer on what's included in the package. these aren't dealbreakers on their own, but stacked together, they're a pattern.
does the work look like the room actually felt? not styled, not staged - felt. that's the only question worth asking at the end of all this, and it's the one most people skip.
